The inaugural ASEAN Maritime Security Alumni Symposium, jointly supported by the Air and Space Power Centre (ASPC), International Policy Division (IPDIV), and Sea Power Centre – Australia (SPC-A), marks a significant milestone in regional maritime security cooperation. This event brings together distinguished alumni from various ASEAN member states, incoming scholars of the Spring 2024 Maritime Security Research Program, and alumni from the Visiting Naval and Visiting Air Force Fellowship Programs. Additionally, we are honored to host maritime security experts, including academics from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies-Nanyang Technological University, staff & international Liaison Officers from the Information Fusion Centre (IFC)-Singapore, and representatives from the Ministry of Defence of Singapore.
This symposium serves as a catalyst for fostering invaluable networking opportunities and strengthening people-to-people links among maritime security practitioners. It represents a concerted effort to address pressing maritime challenges through collaborative engagement and shared expertise.
Executive Director ISI and Director of Research of ISI, contribute as speakers in plenary sessions where each of them brings the topics of Maritime Security Challenges in the Malacca Strait and Nuclear Proliferation and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific: Assessing regional preparedness for potential disasters, which will be conveyed on 29 August 2024.
ISI ED demonstrated the potential disruption to the Malacca Straits, which needs closer inspection. She emphasized that potential threats could manifest in many forms, from naval blockage to gas pipeline sabotage and underwater cable wiretapping. If such threats materialize, the flow of global waterborne commerce and the security of the coastal states will be at grave risk. The presentation stresses the need for further research on the impact of the disruption of the Malacca Straits, which could vary across the coastal states and international users.
